The Landfill Communities Fund is intended to encourage partnerships between the landfill operators (LOs), local authorities, the local community and voluntary organisations to promote environmental projects. Landfill operators can donate up to 20% of their tax liability to approved environmental bodies who can carry out those projects.
The projects which receive funding through the Landfill Communities Fund must comply with at least one of the objects listed in Section 33 (2) of the Landfill Tax Regulations. These are listed below.
a) Reclamation of land, the use of which is prevented by previous activity; e.g. contamination or pollution. The polluter of the land is not eligible for funding to reclaim it.
b) Projects to reduce or prevent pollution of land, whose use is prevented by a previous activity;
d) Provision and maintenance of public amenities (parks, cycle routes, hedgerow and tree planting, creation of play areas etc.)*
da) The conservation of a specific species or a specific habitat where it naturally occurs
e) Restoration and repair of buildings for religious worship or of other historic or architectural interest*
f) Administration and other costs of other environmental bodies
* Objects D & E must usually take place within 10 miles of a Landfill Site.
